Comments in previous blogs have not been very useful. For some reason there are people who feel justified in "drive-by" commenting, or just plain trolling. Many people would tell me in person that they read my blog, but those people -- the ones I really wanted to have a conversation with -- never left comments. The drive-bys lower the quality of the conversation to the point where the really interesting people don't get involved.

In order to develop better discussions, they will be moderated, assertively if not aggressively, so that people who behave badly are removed. I will start by using a Google group because that seems the simplest first step, but if some other medium appears that seems like it might be better (for example, the framework they use for StackOverflow), I'd like to try that as well. I want to start a serious conversation so anything that helps is worth trying -- the Reinventing Business project is about experimentation.

Moderation may always be difficult, but we can discover better ways for it to happen (which might even produce better ways to build teams). In the meantime I'd like to figure out some way to get the desired results, which means setting the bar fairly low -- anyone who is bringing the conversation down, by either passively derailing, or actively being negative about everything -- should be first warned and later ejected. Disagreeing is one thing, but being disagreeable is not OK.

I want to encourage the creation of ideas. The book Switch says that you need a protected space to nurture ideas, away from naysayers. Improvisational acting is all about "yes, and!" and never "no." Any kind of ridicule, whether overt or masked, is not welcome here.
